"My father never voted in his life and, if he had, I doubt if we would have supported the same candidates," said Michael Gilbert. "But it didn't matter, because he taught me the most important lesson of all: Do something you love with your life. And he demonstrated his commitment to that when I was young and unfocused by joining me in each of my varied interests. Everything I did, if it was done from the heart, regardless of remuneration, was validated by my father. He went along for the ride, he got me the tools I needed, and he held up a mirror so that I could see how I was doing."

"It is my sincere hope that the Gilbert Center, in some small way, might take this spirit of good work to the nonprofit sector, where it has its best audience. I hope that by example, by the creation of supportive environments and tools, and by creating a validating culture, the Gilbert Center will help the nonprofit sector move to new levels of success."
