The Nonprofit Email Study was a large scale examination of the role that electronic mail can play in advancing a nonprofit organization’s relationship with its stakeholders, whether they are donors, volunteers, activists, clients, or others. This study had an important precursor in The Nonprofit Email Survey, the results for which were delivered in the research report: Disconnected – The First Nonprofit Email Survey, and it’s sister editorial article: The Email Savvy Organization. Before the survey, these articles got all this interest in nonprofit email started: Gilbert Email Manifesto and its follow up piece, Email Manifesto Firestorm.
The study partnered leading consultants with nonprofit organizations in a number of trials to assess the effectiveness of email based relationship development and management approaches. (See the list of Consultants who participated and also the fabulous Nonprofit Organizations that participated!)
The research questions that were tackled include: Can email increase donations or volunteering? How can a nonprofit develop increasing levels of “permission” with their stakeholders through email? What are the best practices with regard to online newsletters and surveys? How can a nonprofit successfully manage a large number of email relationships?
Participating nonprofits in this study had the support of some of the leading consultants in the field. They received advanced software services at no charge, and all were able to advance their relationships with their stakeholders. Unfortunately, the research was privately funded and the results were therefore privately reported upon.
